Intimacy Directing

A queer, trans, and nonbinary person with short dark hair wearing a white T-shirt with red trim and striped overalls, touching their neck gently and looking slightly upward.

Observing the all-too-common lack of emphasis on consent and frequent abuse of power in the theatre community, Marie was inspired to embark on the journey of learning intimacy direction. Intimacy directors not only advocate for the actors, who often have less power in the room, but also help out directors and creatives by sharing ideas and solutions specific to choreographing intimacy.

As an intimacy director, Marie’s priority is the physical and emotional safety of everyone involved. They center safety by establishing a culture of consent in the room; frequently checking in with actors and giving them tools to advocate for their wants, needs, and boundaries; keeping everyone informed so they can prepare and consent to anything happening; and using strategies and language from their intimacy training and research on nonviolent communication to facilitate sensitive or high-conflict conversations.
